The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on Tuesday ordered Karnataka to Launch 9.19 tmcft of water to the month of June in the Biligundlu reservoir to the Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu.

  • The order was issued in a meeting of the jurisdiction in Central Water Commission's office at New Delhi, where officials in the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka engaged. The meeting was held under the leadership of the Chairman of the Authority, S Masood Hussain.

  • This order came after the agents from Tamil Nadu put a request in the assembly, to direct Karnataka to release water punctually for its Kuruvai crops in the delta districts of Tamil Nadu.

    • Kuruvai, also known as"short-term" in Tamil, is the plants grown in Cauvery Delta of Tamil Nadu state in India.
    • The plants that are grown in this delta are largely paddy and the health of these plants and the eventual livelihood of these farmers are extremely dependent on an abundant stream of water on the Cauvery river.
